Since joining the European Union, the trend of trust in the EU and in the national governments has moved in parallel in Hungarian public opinion polls. The voters project their overall sentiments about the “state of affairs” (deriving from their opinion on the government’s job) to the EU, thus the latter can be the “victim” of domestic political debates. The huge confidence loss of the government since 2006 has resulted in the decline of the EU’s popularity, falling below 50%.
